How to ask Explorer about advanced stats
Type a player, a stat and a season, or tap any question below to run it. Each answer names the games it covers and the games behind it. These are measured results from past games, not projections or picks. Back to the Explorer ask box.
Question patterns
[player] on off [season]
For example: Cooper Flagg on off 2025-26[team] [offensive, defensive or net] rating with [player] on the floor [season]
For example: Mavericks defensive rating with Cooper Flagg on the floor 2025-26[team] with and without [player] [season]
For example: Knicks with and without Jalen Brunson 2025-26[player] usage rate, PIE, net rating or defensive rating [season]
For example: Luka Doncic usage rate 2025-26[player] true shooting % or effective field goal % [season]
For example: Nikola Jokic true shooting % 2025-26[player] plus-minus with [teammate] [season]
For example: Jalen Brunson plus-minus with Karl-Anthony Towns 2025-26NBA teams best defensive rating, or fastest pace [season]
For example: NBA fastest pace 2025-26
Name the season with both years, as in 2025-26. On/off and these ratings are answered for whole seasons, not a last-few-games window, because a handful of games is mostly noise. Say “on off”, “on vs off” or “with [player] on the floor”.
NBA advanced stats
On/off impact
- On/off: the team’s ratings with the player on the floor and on the bench, in the same games
- Net rating: points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions
- Offensive and defensive rating: points scored and points allowed per 100 possessions (for defense, lower is better)
Games and seasons: 2025-26 regular season, games with play-by-play whose lineups match the box score. Each answer prints the games, minutes and possessions on both sides.
Team ratings and shooting efficiency
- True shooting %: points per shooting attempt, counting threes and free throws
- Effective FG%: field goal percentage with a made three counted as 1.5 twos
Games and seasons: 2025-26 regular season. Team ratings and shooting are season totals (sum over sum); team boards rank teams with at least 70% of the most games played. A player’s own rating (“Victor Wembanyama defensive rating”) is his team’s rating with him on the floor, averaged over his games weighted by his minutes.
Usage, pace and impact
- Usage rate: the share of his team’s possessions a player ends with a shot, a free throw trip or a turnover while on the floor
- PIE: Player Impact Estimate: a player’s share of the game’s positive events, such as points, rebounds, assists and steals, less misses, fouls and turnovers
- Pace: possessions per game
Games and seasons: 2025-26 regular season. Usage and PIE are minutes-weighted averages of each game’s value from the advanced box score. Pace ranks teams with at least 70% of the most games played.
Two players together
- Plus-minus with a teammate: the player’s plus-minus per game, counting only the games the teammate also played
Games and seasons: 2025-26 regular season, games both players appeared in. It is a game-level number: how the pair performs on the floor together as a lineup is not answered yet.
The league’s highest usage rates are on the NBA usage rate leaders page.

College basketball

Games and seasons: The 2025-26 college basketball regular season, computed as sum over sum. Rankings need a minimum number of games, said in the answer.
Common questions
- What does on/off mean in Explorer?
- It compares a team’s offensive, defensive and net rating per 100 possessions with the player on the floor and on the bench, in the same games. Minutes and possessions on both sides are printed, so a small sample is visible.
- What is net rating?
- Net rating is points scored minus points allowed per 100 possessions. A positive number means the team outscored its opponents over those possessions.
- Which games and seasons do the NBA advanced stats cover?
- The examples on this page use the 2025-26 NBA regular season. On/off uses the games where the lineups rebuilt from play-by-play match every player’s box-score minutes; each answer says how many of the player’s games that is.
- Does a good on/off number mean the player caused it?
- No. On/off describes what happened with him on and off the floor; his teammates and opponents differ between the two samples. Explorer says so under every on/off answer.
- Can Explorer give a lineup rating for two players together?
- Not yet. The closest question it answers is a player’s plus-minus per game in the games a teammate also played, for example “Luka Doncic plus-minus with Austin Reaves 2025-26”.
